Watering correctly is one of the most important parts of keeping your topiary healthy, especially during the first year after planting.
Newly Delivered Topiary
When your topiary first arrives it may have spent time in transit, so give it a thorough watering as soon as it is planted or placed in its final position.
For the first few weeks check the soil regularly and keep it consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Topiary Planted in the Ground
Once established, most evergreen topiary such as yew, thuja and leylandii are relatively drought tolerant.
However they will still benefit from watering during:
- prolonged dry spells
- very hot summer weather
- the first growing season after planting
A good rule is to water deeply once or twice a week rather than little and often.
Topiary in Pots
Topiary grown in containers dries out faster than plants in the ground.
Check pots regularly and water when the top few centimetres of compost begin to dry.
In warm summer weather container plants may need watering every day.
Signs Your Topiary Needs Water
Look for:
- dry soil or compost
- drooping foliage
- dull or slightly faded leaf colour
Regular watering and good drainage will keep your plant looking fresh and vibrant.
