Most evergreen topiary varieties grown in the UK are fully hardy, but a little winter care will help keep them looking their best.
Plants in the Ground
Established topiary in borders usually needs very little protection during winter.
However it is helpful to:
ensure soil drains well
avoid waterlogged conditions
remove heavy snow from branches
Topiary in Pots
Container plants are more exposed to cold temperatures.
To protect them during severe weather:
move pots to a sheltered location
raise containers slightly off the ground
avoid letting compost become completely dry
Wind Protection
Cold drying winds can sometimes cause foliage browning.
Positioning topiary in a slightly sheltered area will help prevent this.
With the arrival of spring, plants will naturally resume strong healthy growth.
