How to care for Topiary in Pots

Topiary performs extremely well in containers and is perfect for patios, terraces and entranceways.

With the right care, potted topiary can thrive for many years.

Choosing the Right Pot

Select a container that is:

  • slightly larger than the root ball

  • strong and stable

  • fitted with drainage holes

Heavier pots such as terracotta or stone help prevent tall topiary from becoming unstable in wind.

Compost and Drainage

Use a good quality multipurpose compost and ensure drainage is excellent.

Adding a small layer of gravel or crocks at the bottom of the pot can help prevent waterlogging.

Feeding

Container plants benefit from regular feeding.

Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth and vibrant colour.

Repotting

Every 2–3 years your topiary may benefit from fresh compost or a slightly larger pot to allow the roots to continue developing.
